Movie: Golas y Metas

Posted April 19th, 2010 in Uncategorized by steve

The East Hampton Star has an interesting article about Ginger Gentile, a documentary filmmaker living in Argentina. Gentile has produced a film called Golas y Metas, or en Ingles, Goals for Girls.

The film focuses on young female soccer players in an Argentine slum. What makes the topic noteworthy is the focus on how women playing sports challenges traditional Argentine gender roles. In Argentina, as in many other countries around the world, women who play sports are viewed as problematic.

The film is a video diary created in part by the players themselves. Goals for Girls has won a couple of awards already and is scheduled to be released this summer.  You can learn more about the project here:

I can’t wait to see this movie. Two ex-college soccer players, one male, and one female, travel the world playing informal pickup games and film it. If only I’d thought of doing such a thing when I was young and traveling the world. (If only I’d been an ex-college soccer star, too.)
